Imagine clocks in Europe inspiring a gift for children. That’s the story of the Delacorte Musical Clock. It stands right here in Central Park near the Wildlife Center and Children’s Zoo. The Delacorte Musical Clock is more than just a timepiece. It is a whimsical landmark.

George T. Delacorte Jr. gifted the clock to the city. He was a publisher and philanthropist. He dedicated it in 1965. The clock was inspired by musical clocks Delacorte saw in Europe.

Look up. You will see the three-tiered tower above the arcade. The Delacorte Clock features animals playing instruments. Two chimpanzees strike a bell on top. Below them, six bronze animals rotate around the clock’s base. These figures include a goat, kangaroo, penguin, bear, hippo and elephant. Each animal turns on its axis. Andrea Spadini created these whimsical sculptures. You can find his signature at the base of each animal.

Every half hour the Delacorte Musical Clock springs to life. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., it plays music. The music is digitally programmed. It selects from one of 44 pre-recorded tracks. The songs change with the seasons. Expect holiday tunes from Thanksgiving until the second week of January. The music and moving animals create a visual and auditory spectacle.

The Delacorte Clock has a varied musical repertoire. You might hear “Frère Jacques” or “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. During the holidays, “Winter Wonderland” and “Jingle Bells” fill the air.

The Delacorte Musical Clock requires daily care. A member of the Central Park Conservancy ensures the track is clear. The Conservancy’s team also cleans and waxes the bronze animals each year.

The Delacorte Clock has appeared in several films. These include “Madagascar” and “A Rainy Day in New York”.

The clock reminds us to appreciate beauty in Central Park. Take a moment to watch the animals dance. Listen to the chimes echo. The Delacorte Musical Clock is a timeless masterpiece. It embodies generosity and community spirit. It is a lasting legacy of George Delacorte.
