Is this sanctuary new? The modern design of Zum Guten Hirten might lead you to think so. You are standing before a church deeply rooted in Augsburg’s evolving landscape. Zum Guten Hirten arose from the transformation of the old airfield. It became a beacon for a diverse community. Refugees, students, and longtime residents alike found common ground within its walls. The church you see embodies this spirit of unity. It was consecrated in 1986, a testament to Augsburg’s growth. The architects, Gärnter and Jenkel, envisioned a space that embraced both modern aesthetics and timeless spirituality. Notice the striking crucifix inside. Crafted by Reinhold Grübl, it depicts Christ not in agony, but in triumph. His outstretched arms seem to encompass the entire congregation. The architect’s original plan included a much taller bell tower for Zum Guten Hirten. This would have made the church bells audible across the entire neighborhood. However, the parish priest at the time, Werner Appelt, insisted on a more modest design. He believed the tower’s height should harmonize with the surroundings, not overpower them. It’s a subtle detail but speaks volumes about the church’s ethos. Zum Guten Hirten stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal, reminding us that even amidst constant change, faith and community provide steadfast anchors.
