Opened in 1961 Holy Cross Cemetery offers a serene final resting place. This Catholic cemetery is located on James Island. It provides a dignified Christian burial. It serves members of Charleston and surrounding communities. The need for additional burial space grew. St. Lawrence Cemetery downtown was nearing capacity. Holy Cross Cemetery spans nearly 20 acres. It is adorned with Live Oak, Water Oak, Magnolia and Palm trees.

Holy Cross Cemetery offers various burial options. These include in-ground and above-ground casket burial. Columbariums are available for cremated remains. There are also in-ground cremation burial options in peaceful gardens. The St. Nicholas Cremation Garden is unique. It is located under a lovely tree. This raised garden bed features grass areas and a central flower garden. A dedicated irrigation system ensures its continuous beauty.

Several cremation burial types are available in the St. Nicholas Cremation Garden. Husband and wife can share an in-ground burial. This option includes a shared upright monument. Individuals can have an in-ground burial among flowers. These are marked with a simple river rock marker. Above-ground burial is also an option. Individuals can rest in a unique granite vessel. It both memorializes the individual and safely houses their cremated remains.

The Diocese of Charleston wanted to open a new cemetery on James Island. This was as early as the 1920s. In 1958, the diocese acquired 80 acres of land. Bishop Hallinan consecrated the property on December 4, 1960. Father Joseph Bernardin was assigned director of diocesan cemeteries. Bishop Hallinan chose the name Holy Cross. It recalls the redemption of mankind through Jesus’ death.

The design for Holy Cross was modern. One section accommodates sunken memorial stones. This creates a flush clean minimalist aesthetic. A second section is for above-ground memorial stones. This provides a more traditional aesthetic. Today Holy Cross Cemetery continues to serve the Catholic community. It offers a peaceful and beautiful place of remembrance. The gates are always open. Visitors can reflect and honor loved ones. The office is open from 7 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday. Holy Cross Cemetery stands as a testament to faith and remembrance.
