Before Tao Poon MRT Station existed the area was very different. It was a large local community. Government offices, shopping options and markets were here. Furniture shops stretched towards Bang Pho district. The arrival of the MRT changed everything.

The station opened first with only the Purple Line in August 2016. There were initial setbacks. It wasn’t connected to Bangkok’s rapid transit system right away. There were construction delays and contract disputes.

To resolve this Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha stepped in. He used Section 44 of the 2014 interim constitution. This allowed construction to continue and BEM to operate the Blue Line. During the initial period a free shuttle bus connected Tao Poon to Bang Sue MRT station.

The one-station Blue Line extension opened in August 2017. This connected Bang Sue to Tao Poon. Direct transfers between the two lines became possible. Tao Poon served as the Blue Line’s terminal until December 2019.

Interestingly the Purple Line is planned for further expansion. It will extend southward from Tao Poon to Rat Burana. This extension received approval in 2017. Construction began in 2022 and is expected to finish by 2027.

Today Tao Poon is more than just a transit hub. It is becoming a new CBD of northern Bangkok.
