Overlooking the majestic Hudson River, Tryon Park’s 67 acres offer a tranquil escape. Tryon Park wasn’t always a peaceful haven. It was once the site of the Battle of Fort Washington, a pivotal moment in the Revolutionary War. The British victory led to the area being named after the last British governor of colonial New York, William Tryon. Fast forward to 1917. John D. Rockefeller Jr. envisioned a different future for this land. He began acquiring the estates that dotted the area, including the grand Tryon Hall, once owned by C. K. G. Billings. Rockefeller enlisted the Olmsted Brothers, renowned landscape architects, to transform the rugged terrain into a public park. Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. embraced the challenge. He used the natural Manhattan schist to create overlooks, terraces, and winding paths, showcasing breathtaking views of the Palisades. The park opened in 1935, a gift from Rockefeller to the city. Eight miles of pedestrian paths meander through wooded slopes and open lawns, inviting exploration. The Heather Garden, a vibrant tapestry of heathers, heaths, and perennials, offers a sensory delight. Originally, the Billings mansion was intended to house Rockefeller’s growing collection of medieval art. However, a fire in 1926 destroyed the mansion, leading to the construction of The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, nestled within Tryon Park. Today, Tryon Park stands as a testament to Rockefeller’s vision and Olmsted Jr.’s artistry. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine, offering a unique experience for all who visit. Tryon Park remains a beloved destination, a place where visitors can stroll along the promenade, explore the gardens, and enjoy panoramic views. It’s a reminder of the power of philanthropy and the enduring beauty of nature in the heart of New York City.
