A modernist landmark. That’s how The New York Times described Butterfield House. Right here before you stands this architectural gem. Built in 1962 it’s a cooperative apartment building in Manhattan’s West Village. It’s located between Fifth and Sixth Avenues within the Greenwich Village Historic District.

Designed by William J Conklin and James Rossant of Mayer Whittlesey & Glass it’s a shining example of mid-century modern architecture. Both architects were influenced by Walter Gropius founder of the Bauhaus School. The building’s design is a testament to their modernist ideals.

Notice the deep bay windows. They are a key feature. Many apartments are floor-through. This means views of the street on one side and landscaped inner gardens and fountains on the other. Most apartments have balconies or terraces overlooking the garden.

Butterfield House isn’t just visually stunning. It has a fascinating history. It’s named after Union Civil War General Daniel Butterfield. He’s credited with composing Taps. The building stands on the site of his former home.

The building received numerous accolades upon its completion. The Municipal Art Society awarded Mayer Whittlesey & Glass a Certificate of Merit in 1963. Paul Goldberger included Butterfield House on his list of the 10 Top Postwar Apartment Buildings in New York City. The AIA Guide to NYC even calls it “The friendly neighborhood high rise”.

Over the years Butterfield House has housed many notable residents. These include the co-founder of Warby Parker Neil Blumenthal. United States Attorney General Ramsey Clark also lived here. Tony Award-winning lyricist Jack Feldman once called this place home. The building’s legacy extends beyond architecture and design.

The Butterfield House is more than just apartments. It’s a blend of history modern design and community. It’s a testament to skillful urban planning and a harmonious integration of modern architecture into a historic setting. This building seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with the charm of its surroundings. It’s a true example of urban harmony.
