“Did you know a saint associated with head pain rests here?” We are standing before the Chiesa di San Pietro Martire. This church has an intriguing story. It involves faith, assassination and a remarkably swift path to sainthood. Our story centers on San Pietro Martire himself.

San Pietro da Verona was a Dominican friar. He lived and preached in this Milanese parish and throughout Lombardy. Tradition credits him with founding the first Misericordia in Florence in 1244.

His life met a violent end on April 6 1252. Assassins murdered him. Legend says he wrote “Credo” meaning “I believe” on the ground with his own blood. San Pietro’s body rests in the Cappella Portinari. Devotees seek his protection against headaches.

The story takes us back to the 13th century. Pietro da Verona was originally from a family devoted to an heretical movement. Later, he joined the Dominican order. Pope Gregory IX chose him to lead the Inquisition tribunal in Milan. He had the power to suppress heresy. He also restored the Catholic Church’s prestige through his preaching.

San Pietro faced formidable opposition. His efforts to quell heresy made him enemies. They silenced him permanently. Near Barlassina, assassins attacked him. They struck him with a falcastro. This is a large curved knife. The blow proved fatal.

What makes San Pietro’s story unique? He was canonized in less than a year after his death. Pope Innocent IV issued the canonization. It recognized Pietro not as an inquisitor but as a martyr for Christ. His death led to many conversions. Numerous heretics returned to the Roman Church.

His figure served the Visconti family. They needed to reconnect with the Roman Church. They used the friars for this.

Now look at the column. It is near the Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio’s garden. The statue on top shows San Pietro Martire. Notice the large knife in his head.

The Arca di San Pietro Martire holds his remains. Giovanni di Balduccio sculpted it. The tomb features complex iconography. Allegorical figures represent virtues. Reliefs depict scenes from his life. These include his funeral and canonization. The Arca was completed in 1339. You can find it in the Cappella Portinari of the Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio.

The Chiesa di San Pietro Martire and the Arca tell a compelling story. It is a story of faith, martyrdom and political maneuvering.
