Welcome to Tarout Island a place where history seeps from the very ground beneath our feet. This is not just an island. Tarout Island is a story etched in sand and stone.

For millennia people have called Tarout Island home. Imagine settlements here dating back to 5000 BC. That’s before the pyramids. Tarout Island was a vital hub of the Dilmun Kingdom. This kingdom flourished around 3000 BC.

Tarout Island’s strategic location made it a key player in regional trade. Mesopotamian merchants frequented its shores. Coastal communities relied on its bustling markets. Tarout Island connected East and West.

Let’s talk about names. The ancient Arabs knew this place as Ishtarut. The Greeks called it Tharro. In the Middle Ages, it was often Dairin. Today, we know it as Tarout Island.

Archaeological finds on Tarout Island tell tales of empires. Dilmunites Akkadians Assyrians and Persians all left their mark. The Persian Islamic Portuguese and Ottoman empires each controlled Tarout Island at various times.

Consider the golden statue of Ashtaroot. This precious artifact was unearthed in a Tarout Island palm grove. Many other statues copper vessels and traditional weapons have been found here. These treasures are now displayed in the Riyadh Museum.

The Portuguese also left their mark on Tarout Island. The Portuguese fort in Al Deyrah stands as a testament to their presence. It was built on the ruins of settlements dating back over 5000 years. The Portuguese were forced to leave Tarout Island in 1559.

In 1959 a local man stumbled upon rocks with Sabaean inscriptions. Danish archaeologists excavated pottery shards dating back to 4500 BC in 1968. Workers building a causeway found Stone Age artifacts in 1962. Tarout Island continues to reveal its secrets.

One remarkable find was a Sumerian statue of a naked man. It is made of dark grey stone. A farmer discovered it in the 1950s. Superstitious villagers damaged it. It has since been restored and now resides in the National Museum of Riyadh.

Tarout Island also boasts a rich maritime history. It has long been an important seaport. Boats from the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean docked here. Tarout Castle stands in the heart of the island. It is surrounded by small villages. The castle was built between 1515 and 1521.

Tarout Castle has four towers. A deep well sits in its courtyard. This was likely used to store provisions during sieges. An ancient army cannon discovered here is now on display in the Dammam Regional Museum.

Tarout Island offers many attractions. There is the Tarout historical fort. Al Rafiea airport was built in 1911 by the British Empire. The Fortress of Abu Al-leaf was destroyed by the British Empire in 1866. Also, Darin seaport traditional houses Al Khudar mosque and the various cornices.

The villages of Tarout Island each have their own character. Al Deyrah is the island’s administrative center. Its narrow streets evoke the ancient past. Al Deyrah was once surrounded by a protective fence.
