Did you know that the Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df is one of the oldest buildings in the Oberhavel district? This charming village church stands in Schu00f6nflieu00df. Schu00f6nflieu00df is a part of the Mu00fchlenbecker Land municipality in Brandenburg. The Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df is more than just a historical landmark. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the community.

The Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df’s story began in the first half of the 13th century. Its long nave was built from field stones. This makes it a remarkable example of early construction in the region. Around 1700, the windows of the nave were enlarged. However, the three-window group on the east wall still features its original narrow lancet windows. These offer a glimpse into the church’s earliest days.

In 1877 and 1878, a three-story, Romanesque Revival tower was added to the west side of the Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df. It was constructed with yellow brick. The tower’s first floor houses the clock. The second floor features sound arcades designed as biforia. Inside hangs the belfry. It contains three medieval church bells.

Stepping inside the Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df, you will notice the flat ceiling. It is framed by stucco vaults. The altar bears an altarpiece. Its three paintings depict the Crucifixion, the Baptism, and the Last Judgment. A picture of the Last Supper is on the predella. On the south side is a patronage box. It was originally glazed and displays the alliance coat of arms of the Broesigke and Bredow families. A sacrament house stands on the east wall.

The organ sits on the west gallery. Wilhelm Sauer installed it in 1899. It was placed within a case dating back to 1785.

Interestingly, the Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df may have served a dual purpose in its early years. Given its size relative to the village population, it might have acted as a refuge. It could have protected residents during times of war.

The Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df has been undergoing extensive renovations since 2024. During excavations on the north wall’s exterior, archaeologists discovered a burial site from the 16th century. Inside, a medieval cross was found beneath layers of plaster. Plans include restoring all the walls and windows after the north wall is complete. A drainage system will be installed to address moisture problems.

Despite the construction, the Schu00f6nflieu00df Summer Music series continues to be held. This shows the community’s dedication to preserving its cultural traditions. For over 25 years, these concerts have filled the Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df with music. The Freundeskreis Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df e.V. supports the church.

The Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df stands as a symbol of faith. It represents resilience and community spirit. Its ongoing restoration ensures that its rich history will endure for generations to come. Take a moment to appreciate the Dorfkirche Schu00f6nflieu00df’s beauty. It is a true gem in Mu00fchlenbecker Land.
