High above Ploshchad Vosstaniya stands a grey granite obelisk. It proudly displays a bronze star. This is the Hero City Obelisk. It commemorates Leningrad’s incredible resilience during the Siege of Leningrad.

Leningrad suffered greatly during World War II. The city endured a brutal 872-day siege. Over one million civilians perished mostly from starvation. The obelisk stands as a testament to their suffering and survival. It also celebrates the heroism of the Soviet forces.

The obelisk wasn’t always there. Before 1985 an equestrian statue of Emperor Alexander III occupied this spot. It was removed in 1937. For many years the square remained empty. The 36-meter tall obelisk was finally unveiled in 1985. This was on May 8th the eve of Victory Day.

The obelisk’s design is unique. It is star-shaped in cross-section. Bronze victory wreaths encircle the base. Patriotic slogans are engraved in oval haut-reliefs below the wreaths. It is a truly unforgettable monument.

The Hero City Obelisk is a powerful symbol. It represents the unwavering spirit of Leningrad’s citizens. It serves as a solemn reminder of the city’s tragic past. It is a must-see for any visitor to Saint Petersburg. It stands in front of the Moscow Railway Station. It is easily accessible from the Ploshchad Vosstaniya metro station.
