“He Taught Along the Pathways… Let the Path Continue with Us!” That’s the welcoming message of Sojourners Christian Church. This church embraces the diverse paths of faith. It nurtures all people. Sojourners Christian Church serves humankind and our global home.
The red Chalice is central to Sojourners Christian Church’s identity. It reminds us of the Christian Church. This affiliation is with the Disciples of Christ. They are a movement for wholeness. This is in a fragmented world. The chalice also symbolizes the Lord’s Table. Here we meet weekly. We live out the second half of the Disciple’s mission. We welcome all to the Lord’s Table. God has welcomed us.
A circle of color surrounds the chalice. It represents community. It means inclusion and diversity. It symbolizes energy. This illustrates our ethic of radical welcome. It shows our circle of love and care. The circle is open-ended. This suggests an open door. It welcomes all whom God may draw into the fellowship.
To join Sojourners Christian Church, affirm Jesus. Affirm that he is the Christ. Acknowledge him as the Son of the Living God. Seek to follow him as your Savior and Lord. Faith here is a combined effort of head and heart. Each person studies scripture. They grow in faith. Growth best takes place in Christian community. We strive to understand scripture’s original context.
The communion table is open here at Sojourners Christian Church. Everyone who believes in Christ is invited to receive communion. This is regardless of denomination or church affiliation. Baptism affirms God’s grace. It shows our commitment to follow. We practice believer’s baptism by immersion. We recognize and affirm all other methods of baptism.
Individuals at Sojourners Christian Church can have different opinions. They can have different understandings. All can remain together as one body. We affirm individuals’ right to decide. We create safe places to make faithful, healthy decisions.
All Christians are gifted and called to ministry. Ministry is not the job of clergy alone. It is the responsibility of all who claim Christ. God gifts each of us for ministry. He asks us to use our gifts for the good of the whole. Both men and women are called to leadership in Sojourners Christian Church. We affirm that both genders are gifted and called. The Christian Church ordained its first woman in the late 1800s.
Ecumenical relationships are important to Sojourners Christian Church. We believe our effectiveness increases by working together. This is even when we are divided. We began with the goal of unity for all Christians. Working on justice issues is vital at home and abroad. Justice and mercy are central to God’s heart. We have a responsibility to work for the poor. We strive for a just and merciful world.
Sojourners Christian Church’s mission includes acceptance. It means welcoming all people. We walk alongside them on a journey of faith and service. We live our faith through hospitality. We share passionate worship. We focus on intentional faith development. We commit to risk-taking mission and service. We show Spirit-led generosity.
Sojourners Christian Church became a Green Chalice Ministry. This happened in September 2015. We affirmed the Alverna Covenant. We pledged to walk more gently on the earth. We manage our facilities and activities sustainably. We reduce, reuse, and recycle. We promote natural solutions. This is for cleaning and green-space maintenance. Our team installed a rain barrel. We use it in our butterfly gardens. We are delighted by the presence of monarch caterpillars in the spring. Sojourners Christian Church is a place where faith meets action.
