Thousands walk through its doors yearly, seeking solace and a path away from gang life. Homeboy Industries offers more than just job training. It acknowledges the deep-seated trauma that fuels the cycle of violence and incarceration. Here, amidst the aroma of fresh bread from Homeboy Bakery and the clatter of plates from Homegirl Cafe, healing begins. Homeboy Industries provides a comprehensive array of services. These include tattoo removal, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, and educational classes. In 2012 alone, Homeboy Industries provided over 800 tattoo removal sessions monthly. They held over 45 classes each month for more than 400 clients. They even ventured into solar panel installation training, with many graduates finding employment in the solar industry. But what truly sets Homeboy Industries apart is its focus on kinship and community. Former gang rivals work side-by-side. They share their stories and support each other’s journeys towards transformation. One powerful anecdote exemplifies this spirit. Trainee Louie Duran, on his last day, addressed his fellow trainees. He said, “I will never be able to pay Homeboy back with money, but I will pay them back… with my success.” He called everyone “diamonds covered in dust,” and Homeboy Industries the place where that dust is wiped away. The organization’s holistic approach is a testament to its dedication. It’s a “one-stop shop” where clients can access a range of services during working hours, minimizing attrition.
