Tranquility descends upon Friedhof Bemerode. This peaceful haven in Hanover’s southern Kirchrode district holds a history interwoven with St Johannis Church. Established in 1864 the cemetery’s origins trace back to the original St Johannis Chapel. The ever-growing population of Bemerode a then independent community necessitated the construction of a new church in 1962. This growth also led to an increased demand for burial spaces. Existing cemeteries were nearing capacity. A new church cemetery was deemed necessary.

The grounds surrounding St Johannis Church were chosen for the new cemetery. Grave pathways were laid out and rows of trees were planted. These trees provided a natural screen creating a serene atmosphere. A stone cross marks the cemetery’s center. In 1974 Bemerode was incorporated into Hanover. However St Johannis Church retained control of the cemetery’s administration and upkeep. Following Bemerode’s incorporation an urn burial field was added offering both communal and individual interments.

Today Friedhof Bemerode spans approximately 1.5 hectares. It’s one of Hanover’s smaller cemeteries. Its tranquil setting contrasts with the bustling city. The cemetery offers various burial options from large family plots to simple urn graves. This variety caters to diverse needs and preferences. Selecting a burial site is a significant decision a long-term commitment to a specific place. A consultation with the Hanover Cemetery Administration is advisable.
