Why does Peachtree Summit Building look like a slice of pie? We’re standing before this unique Atlanta skyscraper, a 30-story triangular prism that dominates the skyline. Peachtree Summit Building wasn’t designed by a pastry chef, but by the architectural firm Toombs, Amisano, and Wells. Its unusual shape is a direct result of its location, squeezed onto a triangular plot of land. Imagine three major Atlanta arteries converging: the Downtown Connector, West Peachtree Street, and Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard. They form the boundaries that give Peachtree Summit Building its distinctive triangular footprint. Constructed in 1975, this building was originally envisioned as the first of three similar structures. However, only Peachtree Summit Building made it from blueprint to reality. Now, picture Atlanta in the late 1970s. MARTA, Atlanta’s rapid transit system, was under construction. West Peachtree Street was being elevated, and Peachtree Summit Building’s architects had to adapt. They designed a three-story lobby to accommodate the street level changes. This foresight ensured the building’s accessibility and integration with the city’s evolving infrastructure. Peachtree Summit Building also holds a curious place in Atlanta’s history. On June 8, 2010, a suspicious package triggered a full-scale evacuation. The mailroom workers feared the worst, suspecting a grenade. The tension was palpable as everyone waited anxiously outside. However, the supposed explosive turned out to be a harmless glass object. The “grenade” was just a look-alike, a quirky footnote in the building’s story. So, next time you see Peachtree Summit Building, remember its unique story. It’s a testament to architectural ingenuity, a witness to Atlanta’s growth, and a building that once briefly held its breath, mistaking glass for danger.
