It’s a haven for shorebirds, especially at high tide when their usual feeding grounds are submerged. The Empire Point Wader Roost was the brainchild of a local group of bird enthusiasts. They recognized the need for a safe space for these feathered travelers and, with the help of the local council, this sanctuary came to be in 1995. They even included a moat, just like a medieval castle, but this one is designed to keep unwanted visitors out, not in. See that raised causeway we’re on? That’s a relic from a coral crushing operation from way back in the 1960s. It used to be trucks rumbling along here, loaded with coral destined for cement factories.
