Atop this hill stands Ankara Kalesi a silent sentinel watching over Ankara for millennia. Its imposing presence speaks of centuries of history empires risen and fallen. This is no mere castle. It is a living testament to the city’s enduring spirit.

Ankara Kalesi wasn’t built in a single moment. Its construction spanned centuries. Initially built by the Phrygians in the 8th century BC it saw further construction and renovation under the Galatians Romans Byzantines Seljuks and Ottomans. Each civilization left its mark. Each layer tells a story.

Imagine Roman Emperor Caracalla repairing its walls in 217 AD. Picture Emperor Justinian II undertaking major renovations in 668 AD. The Seljuks too contributed significantly. They didn’t just repair they added. Their additions are still visible today. Ankara Kalesi bears witness to battles sieges and peaceful times. It has withstood the test of time.

The inner walls surround an area of about 350 meters by 150 meters. The outer walls extend further. They boast about 42 towers many five stories tall. The outer walls offer a stunning view of Ankara’s sprawling urban landscape. The inner castle a smaller structure is made from local Ankara stone and repurposed stones.

A fascinating detail is the reuse of materials. During periods of frequent attacks and reconstruction in the 8th and 9th centuries builders cleverly used salvaged Roman ruins. They incorporated marble blocks columns and even water channels into the castle’s structure. This resourceful approach is reflected in some of the existing sculptures and sarcophagi found within the structure.

Two large gates guard Ankara Kalesi. One leads to the outer fortifications while the other is called the Hisar Gate. The Hisar Gate proudly displays an inscription from the Ilkhanids a detail often overlooked by casual visitors. This is a small yet important clue to the castle’s diverse history.

Ankara Kalesi is more than just stones and mortar. It is a living monument a powerful symbol of Ankara’s resilience. It embodies its past its present and its future. This magnificent structure provides not just a glimpse into the past but also a breathtaking panoramic view of the modern city below. It is a must-see for any visitor to Ankara.
