Soaring high above Plaza de Castilla stands the Obelisco de la Caja. This isn’t just any obelisk. It’s a 92-meter tall marvel of modern design. A gift from Caja Madrid to the city it celebrates their 300th anniversary.

Originally designed to be a dynamic mobile obelisk by Santiago Calatrava the final design is stationary. He envisioned a helicoidal movement. However the immense weight and the underground tunnels beneath the plaza made that impossible. The final height is a compromise. It’s still breathtaking.

The Obelisco’s core is a cylindrical metal shaft. It’s surprisingly slender only two meters in diameter. This shaft rests on three massive metal legs each weighing 50 tons. These legs in turn stand on concrete piles. They’re sunk deep into the ground to distribute the weight evenly. A clever solution to an engineering challenge.

The entire obelisk is clad in 462 bronze strips. These strips are 7.7 meters long. Each one is carefully angled to create the illusion of movement. Calatrava described it as a blend of masculine verticality and feminine movement. A striking contrast.

Initially the bronze strips were meant to move. They were designed to tilt in a wave-like motion creating a truly dynamic spectacle. But high maintenance costs of around 150000 Euros per year halted that ambitious vision. The mechanisms were too complex. Too costly to operate.

Now the Obelisco stands still. It’s a testament to ambition. It represents the enduring spirit of Madrid. The city accepted a compromise but its presence is undeniable. Even in its static form the Obelisco remains a striking landmark. It’s a symbol of the city’s history and its commitment to art. A legacy of a remarkable vision.
