Picture a miniature palace, almost hidden behind trees and nestled between the Hellbrunner Allee and the Salzachauwald. This is Schloss Emslieb, a small but significant part of Salzburg’s history. It may not look like much, its original character having been lost through extensive renovations, but its story is full of twists and turns.

Built in 1618, it was originally a smaller version of the Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona, Italy, built by Jakob Hannibal von Hohenems, nephew of the powerful Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus. You can still see their coats of arms above the entrance and balcony today, a silent testament to the castle’s past. It was a symbol of power within the archbishopric, however, Jakob Hannibal was seen as a bit of a spendthrift, and after his uncle’s death in 1619, he was forced to leave Salzburg. The castle then passed into the hands of Prince Archbishop Pairs Graf Lodron. He generously gifted it to his counsellor Thomas Perger, who was knighted and took the name “von Emslieb”.

The Emslieb family owned the castle for almost a hundred years, but in 1710, it changed hands again. Several families came and went, including the Grimming family and the Bishop of Chiemsee, until 1797 when the property was purchased by Princess Ernestine von Esterhazy, who kept it until 1811. Over the years, the castle underwent many renovations, and its original design changed significantly. Today, it is owned by the art gallery owner Thaddaeus Ropac, and it serves as a venue for exclusive events and receptions.

Schloss Emslieb is a reminder of a time when Salzburg was ruled by powerful archbishops, a time of great wealth and artistic achievement. It may not be a grand palace, but it played its own part in the city’s history, and it still stands as a testament to its past. It’s a hidden gem, waiting to be discovered by those willing to look beyond its unassuming facade.
