Why is the Holy Transfiguration Church in Moscow nicknamed the “Menshikov Tower”? This magnificent church, standing tall and proud before us, has a fascinating history linked to a powerful figure in Russian history: Prince Alexander Menshikov. Now, the church itself was built much earlier, in the 16th century, commissioned by Ivan the Terrible. It was part of the Tsar’s summer residence in the village of Ostrov. But fast forward to the 18th century, and the village was given to the ambitious Prince Menshikov. He was a close confidante of Peter the Great and amassed immense wealth and power. He transformed Ostrov, building a lavish estate with extensive grounds. Yet, of all his grand constructions, only the stables and this striking church remain. You see, the church’s towering presence, reaching 30-35 meters high, and its unique architecture made it a landmark. The octagon perched atop its cross-shaped base, adorned with tiers of corbel arches, creates this sense of upward movement, like it’s reaching for the heavens. It’s no wonder that even Menshikov’s architectural endeavors couldn’t overshadow this house of worship. It’s a beautiful example of steeped church design, later enhanced with a Gothic Revival bell tower. While the interior, unfortunately, wasn’t preserved, the Holy Transfiguration Church stands as a testament to resilience, surviving changing hands and the test of time. So next time you hear it called the “Menshikov Tower”, remember the history, and appreciate the enduring grandeur of the Holy Transfiguration Church itself.
