Ever wondered what Sharjah’s roundabouts symbolize? Al Taawun Roundabout is part of a network of monuments. They speak of the country’s rich history.

Let me introduce you to Al Taawun Roundabout. It is more than just a traffic circle. It is a landmark with a story. These structures are not mere concrete and sand. They stand for something significant.

Sharjah’s roundabouts evolved over time. They reflect the city’s growth and cultural shifts. Some roundabouts commemorate important relationships. Others mark cultural milestones.

Take the Kuwait Roundabout for example. It was built in the mid-1980s. It recognized Kuwait’s contribution to Sharjah. Kuwait helped build Sharjah into what it is today. As far back as the early 1950s, Kuwait provided Sharjah with schools and hospitals. They also supported various social institutions. These institutions were essential for communities.

Many UAE nationals sent their children to Kuwait for studies. Kuwait had a strong reputation in education and culture. Many UAE nationals went to Kuwait for jobs. They sought better career prospects. The Kuwaiti Government even helped build the first radio station.

Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi has written a book. It commemorates Kuwait’s help in structuring the city. The book is titled The History of Kuwait.

Another roundabout with a story is the Cultural Roundabout. In 1987, Sharjah built the Cultural Palace. Soon after, a large flame was lit on a roundabout. The roundabout was named Shula meaning flame. The flame was short-lived. The public raised concerns over the danger of the large flame. It was placed in one of the busiest areas. The flame was connected to a main gas pipe. Everyone became concerned about potential accidents.

The flame was taken down. It was replaced with a sculpture of the Quran. A Spanish architect designed the Quran. He was a close friend of Shaikh Dr Sultan. They decided together how the monument should be constructed. A verse of the Quran is engraved inside. It features gold-plated calligraphy. The roundabout’s name changed several times. It switched from Book Roundabout to Cultural Roundabout.

The Quran has not been moved. It is carefully covered with plastic. This keeps it safe from rubble and dust. The Quran stands at one of Sharjah’s main entrances. It will continue to stand tall for all to see. It will have a new home once the underpass and road lanes are completed.

Al Taawun Roundabout is a reminder of Sharjah’s past. It highlights the relationships and events that shaped the city. It reflects Sharjah’s commitment to culture. Al Taawun Roundabout is a place where history meets the present. It offers a moment to reflect on the emirate’s journey.
