Farming roots meet Asian influences here in Sunnybank. It’s a place where cultures blend and history whispers. Let’s dive into the story of this Brisbane suburb.

Sunnybank’s story begins long before the bustling streets we see today. The Jagera people called this area home for over 20000 years. They thrived here long before European settlers arrived.

Early settlers recognized the land’s potential. The loamy soil was perfect for farming. Fruit, poultry and gardens flourished. Sunnybank was becoming a productive area.

The name “Sunnybank” has Scottish roots. The Gillespie family owned Sunny Brae Estate. “Brae” is Scottish for bank. When the railway arrived in 1885, the area became Sunnybank. The Town of Sunnybank was surveyed in 1886. Land parcels were offered for sale in 1887.

Farmland gradually gave way to suburbia in the 20th century. But Sunnybank wasn’t always just houses and shops.

In 1938, The Oasis opened. It was Brisbane’s most popular tourist attraction. Lush gardens, swimming pools and a mini zoo drew crowds. During World War II, American soldiers used The Oasis for rest. Sadly, The Oasis closed in 1989.

The late 1980s brought big changes. Asian immigrants began settling in Sunnybank. This influx transformed the area. Asian restaurants and businesses popped up. Sunnybank’s primary business district changed dramatically.

Today, Sunnybank is a multicultural hub. Asian influences are strong in design, food and culture. Many businesses are owned by Asian Australians. Bilingual signs in Chinese and English are common. Sunnybank has become Brisbane’s preferred Chinatown.

Sunnybank’s population reflects its diversity. The 2021 census counted 8892 people. Many residents were born overseas. Chinese is a commonly spoken language.

Education has always been important in Sunnybank. Sunnybank State School opened in 1959. Sunnybank State High School followed in 1963. Several other schools serve the community.

Sunnybank is a busy suburb. Mains Road is often packed with traffic. But public transport is readily available. Sunnybank Plaza has a major bus stop. Banoon, Sunnybank and Altandi railway stations provide train services.

Sunnybank has come a long way from its farming days. It’s now a vibrant, multicultural center. The blend of history and Asian culture makes Sunnybank unique. From Sunny Brae Estate to bustling markets, Sunnybank offers a rich experience.
