Isn’t it remarkable that Congregation Adat Ari El stands as the oldest congregation in the Valley? It is more than just a synagogue. It is a vibrant hub of Jewish life in Valley Village.

Founded in 1938 by fifteen couples, it began as the Valley Jewish Community Center. These visionary pioneers recognized the need to serve the growing Jewish population in the San Fernando Valley. Imagine those early days. They met in temporary locations. One spot was even a former speakeasy on Chandler Boulevard. In 1949, Congregation Adat Ari El found its permanent home near Burbank and Laurel Canyon.

In 1972, the congregation officially adopted its Hebrew name. Adat Ari El means Congregation of the Lion of God. This name reflects its connection to Jerusalem. It strives to support its members in many ways.

Congregation Adat Ari El is a center of learning. It serves toddlers, children, teens, singles, couples, and seniors. Its award-winning schools and adult studies programs flourish. The Sisterhood has thrived for generations. Superb educators and administrators make it all possible.

Adat Ari El has a legacy of gifted rabbis and cantors. Devoted lay leaders have also shaped its path. The congregation has set cultural precedents within the Conservative movement. For over 50 years, women have been welcomed to the bema. Lay people share Torah commentary on Shabbat mornings through the Darshanim Program.

Its social action and Israel support programs serve as role models. They inspire Jewish communities across the nation. Alternative prayer services and minyanim foster growth. They encourage intellectual and spiritual development. These experiences cater to all ages and levels of Jewish knowledge. This is achieved without sacrificing traditional Jewish values.

Adat Ari El is a community that cares deeply for its members. It supports them in times of joy and sorrow. It has truly become a second home for many. Currently, about 800 families consider Congregation Adat Ari El their spiritual and communal sanctuary.

Earlier this month, Adat Ari El introduced a new membership structure. It’s called the Sustainability Model. This replaces a traditional system with 22 membership levels. The new approach is give-what-you-can, at the highest level possible. This change followed the hiring of Executive Director Eric Nicastro. There had been a steady drop in families joining.

Before the new model, a family of four could pay close to $4,000 in annual dues. The Sustainability Model has an average level of $2,800. Families can pay as little as $500 annually including High Holy Days tickets. They don’t even need to supply financial information.

The goal is to make being part of the Jewish community less transactional. It shifts toward a partnership where people create the community they want. It reflects their values. Adat Ari El is a historic progressive Conservative congregation. It embraces music and supports women in leadership. It welcomes all who want to lead a Jewish life.
