“A library is the only thing Osaka lacks”. These words fueled the creation of the Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library.

Welcome to the Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library Memorial. It is more than just a library. It is a cultural landmark. It stands as a testament to Osaka’s thirst for knowledge.

The library’s story begins with Tomoito Sumitomo. He was the 15th head of the Sumitomo family. The Sumitomo family had been based in Osaka since the Edo period. Sumitomo donated the library building and funds to purchase books. This act of generosity shaped Osaka’s cultural landscape.

Construction finished in 1904. Additional construction in 1922 created the exterior we see today. The Neo-baroque style captivates visitors. Four massive columns grace the front entrance. Stone walls harmonize with nearby structures. A copper roof dome distinguishes the library.

The library’s main building and wings became important cultural assets in 1974. The library still serves the public. It also houses ancient documents and Osaka-related literature. Business-related books are also stored here.

Magoichi Noguchi and Akira Hidaka designed this library. They were architects from the Sumitomo Temporary Architecture Department. Their vision created a lasting architectural treasure.

Look closely at the main entrance. You will see a plaque reading “Osaka Library”. This inscription is from right to left. Before the Nakanoshima Library, Osaka had no library. The plaque reminds us that this was Osaka’s first library.

Inside the Central Hall, observe the copper plaque. It bears the words “Donation History”. Sumitomo Kichizaemon’s message is on the plaque. He wanted to contribute to Osaka’s culture and education.

Two statues stand along the Central Hall’s far wall. These copper statues depict Greek youths. The right statue is the Yajin Statue. It represents passion. The left statue is the Bunjin Statue. It represents reflection. Kitamura Seibo created these statues. He is also the creator of the Nagasaki Peace Statue.

Outside, notice the monument. It features a tanka poem by Kawada Jun. The poem honors the library’s 50th anniversary. “This sapling of knowledge planted in the center of Osaka 50 years ago has grown into a magnificent tree.”

The Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library stands as a symbol. It symbolizes knowledge and progress. It also embodies the enduring legacy of Sumitomo’s gift to Osaka.
