Stepping back in time, imagine Osaka at the dawn of the 20th century. The year is 1900. Here, amidst the bustling city, rises the 旧新田小学校校舎 (Kyū-Shinden Shōgakkō Kōsha), or the Old Shinden Elementary School Building. This elegant wooden structure, built in traditional Japanese style, stands as a testament to a bygone era. It’s the oldest remaining wooden school building within Osaka Prefecture, a true historical gem. The building embodies the spirit of Japan’s modernization and its commitment to education. Its design, based on blueprints from its construction, features a central entrance hall, flanked by classrooms on either side. A raised wooden platform, called a “engawa”, extends along the front, providing a sheltered space. The eastern end housed the staff room and storage, while the western side once served as the teacher’s residence. The original design included a privy in a separate building connected by a covered walkway. Later renovations in 1923 replaced the teacher’s residence with additional classrooms and expanded the staff room. The building we see today reflects those later modifications. The impressive entrance hall, reminiscent of a small temple, greets visitors with a sense of history and importance. Imagine children hurrying through these very doors, eager to learn and explore. The classrooms, though simple, held the promise of a brighter future for the community. For over 70 years, this building echoed with the laughter of children and the wisdom of teachers. It served as a vital center of learning until 1973 when a new school building was erected. Remarkably, the Old Shinden Elementary School Building was preserved, its historical and cultural value recognized. Today, it serves as a repository of educational materials, offering a glimpse into the past. Each autumn, the building opens its doors to the public, showcasing Meiji-era artifacts and early Showa-era textbooks, further solidifying its role as a tangible link to Osaka’s rich history.
