Remember the James A Garfield School? It stood tall on Waterman Street. A proud testament to Detroit’s past. This wasn’t just any schoolhouse. It was a cornerstone of the community. For generations it shaped young minds. The James A Garfield School opened in 1886. A simple four-room building it served a growing population. But soon it was bursting at the seams. Overcrowding led to its demolition. A new magnificent structure replaced the old one in 1896. Designed by the renowned firm Malcomson and Higginbotham it was a marvel of Late Victorian architecture.

The James A Garfield School stood as a symbol of hope and progress. Its red brick tower and intricate brickwork were a sight to behold. The building was a testament to the community’s dedication to education. The school even had an addition built in 1900. This expanded its capacity to 670 students. The building remained an important part of the Detroit educational landscape for many years.

However things changed. The neighborhood evolved. Enrollment declined. In 1907 Springwells School District merged with Detroit’s school system. This led to a name change. The school became the Frank H Beard School. Honoring Frank H Beard who had been a vital part of the Springwells school board for 17 years. The Beard Elementary School would later move to another location. Ultimately becoming the Roberto Clemente Learning Academy in 2004. The original building served as the Beard Early Childhood Center by 2008. This too eventually closed its doors permanently in 2014.

The once vibrant school stood silent and empty. Until tragedy struck. In July 2022 a devastating fire engulfed the historic building. The flames consumed the structure leaving behind only ashes and memories. In October of that year demolition crews reduced it to rubble. It was a devastating loss. The James A Garfield School a landmark of Detroit’s past is gone. Its legacy however lives on in the stories of the countless students whose lives it touched. This site serves as a poignant reminder of what once was. A reminder of the past and the ever-changing nature of our cities.
