In 1952, plans began for a new girls’ school. In January 1953, Waverley Girls’ High School was born. Initially, it was a school without a name. The first 261 girls were taught in eight prefab classrooms. These classrooms were on the grounds of a nearby boys’ school.

Six months later, Waverley Girls’ High School moved. The new location was a simple prefab building. It was on the Northview High School site next to Balfour Park. The grounds were unfenced. Stray cows sometimes roamed freely.

The permanent building was ready in July 1954. It officially opened in March 1955. Dr W Nicol, the Administrator of the Transvaal, opened it.

The founders found inspiration in Sir Walter Scott’s novels. They chose names from his works for the school houses. Rob Roy, Peverill, Kenilworth, Lochinvar, Marmian and Ivanhoe represent medieval chivalry.

Waverley Girls’ High School traditionally served a white community. This community had a strong Jewish culture. There was also a mix of English, Italian, Lebanese and Portuguese girls. The school grew as parents sought a monastic school for their daughters.

As more schools were established in the area pupil numbers declined. The lowest enrolment was in 1991 with only 385 girls.
