Green Hills Memorial Park opened in 1948. Robert T McNerney envisioned a grand space. He purchased 120 acres of land. Cows once grazed there. Now thousands rest peacefully.
The first Memorial Day ceremonies were spectacular. Twenty military units attended. The annual event grew. In 1966 over 15000 people came to pay their respects. 550 flags lined Western Avenue. A Coast Guard helicopter flew dignitaries over the Catalina Channel. They dropped a wreath in memory of fallen service members.
A significant expansion began in 1965. A new chapel and offices were built. A 70-foot flagpole had to be removed for this project. This shows the evolving needs of Green Hills. Growth meant more space for mourners and those laid to rest.
In the 1970s Rancho Palos Verdes incorporated. Green Hills became part of this new city. The Vietnam War impacted the Memorial Day ceremonies. They stopped after 1970. Vietnam veteran John Frew revived the tradition in 1986.
The current ceremony is a powerful event. Boy Scouts place flags. There are airplane flyovers. Skydivers participate. A keynote speaker addresses the crowd. Around 5000 people attend annually. This shows the enduring importance of remembrance.
In 2011 St Peter’s Episcopal Church found a new home. This historic San Pedro church was relocated to Green Hills. It had faced neglect and vandalism. The move cost $300000. The church opened on Easter Sunday 2012.
Green Hills holds the remains of many notable individuals. George Allen a famous NFL coach is buried here. So is Glen Glenn a renowned sound man. Charles Bukowski the famed author also rests here. This highlights the diverse community remembered within this park.
Green Hills Memorial Park continues to evolve. Concerns over space led to more above-ground crypts. This shows the park’s ongoing adaptation. The Pacific Terrace Mausoleum caused controversy. It is close to the Vista Verde condominiums. This led to complaints and legal disputes.
