The majestic onion domes gleam. This is Saint Andrew Ukrainian-Orthodox Church in Boston.

Saint Andrew Ukrainian-Orthodox Church wasn’t always here. Its story begins in 1954. A community formed. They sought a place to worship. A place to keep their traditions alive. This beautiful church at 24 Orchardhill Road in Jamaica Plain is the result.

The building itself dates to 1958. It was designed by the Ukrainian-born George Kodak. He was inspired by the 18th-century Church of Saint Andrew in Kyiv. That’s where the iconic five onion domes come from. The interior is breathtaking. It is richly decorated with iconographic paintings. These are on the walls and the icon screen at the altar.

In 2018 Saint Andrew’s celebrated its 60th anniversary. That year His Eminence Metropolitan Antony visited. The parish president Jane Yavarow welcomed him. She spoke of the church as more than just four walls. It’s a place for grounding for community and for spiritual healing. The anniversary included a Divine Liturgy. There was a festive meal with lobster bisque. Talented parishioners performed a concert. The music reflected the Ukrainian soul. It highlighted love for their homeland. It spoke of fortitude faith and hope.

Then came 2023. Saint Andrew’s marked its 65th anniversary. Once again Metropolitan Antony visited. This time he was joined by Deacon Pavlo Vysotskyi and seminarians. Jane Yavarow’s greeting was poignant. She spoke of the best of times and the worst of times. She described the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She recalled the church’s unwavering support for Ukraine. The parish raised over $100,000 for humanitarian aid. They shipped countless tons of medical supplies. They helped refugees especially children needing prosthetic limbs. The day’s celebration included a luncheon prepared by Chef Michael. The concert again showcased the talents of the parish members. This time focusing on the resilience of the Ukrainian spirit during the war.

Saint Andrew Ukrainian-Orthodox Church stands as a testament to faith. It is a beacon of community. It is a vibrant part of Boston’s cultural landscape. This is a place of solace and hope. A testament to enduring spirit and unwavering devotion.
