Have you ever felt the pulse of a river a living artery flowing through a city’s heart? That’s the Rivi`ere des Prairies. It’s more than just water. It’s a historical tapestry woven through the very fabric of Montreal.

The Rivi`ere des Prairies a delta channel of the Ottawa River separates Laval and Montreal. The Kanien’keha:ka called it Skowanoti “River behind the island”. Its name however is a bit of a mystery. Some say it’s because of Franu00e7ois des Prairies who mistakenly landed there in 1610. Others believe it was named after someone who drowned in its waters. Still others suggest its beautiful prairies gave it its name. The Rivi`ere des Prairies has borne witness to centuries of history.

Imagine a time long before the bustling city. Archaeological digs reveal traces of human presence dating back to the Laurentian Archaic period thousands of years ago. Later the river became a crucial waterway for indigenous peoples. Their canoes glided along its surface. They fished its waters. This river was the heart of their world. The Rivi`ere des Prairies was a key part of their lives.

In 1671 the Abbu00e9 de Casson granted two fiefs along the Rivi`ere des Prairies. One went to Philippe de Carion du Fresnoy. The other was given to Paul de Maurel. These grants marked the beginning of European settlement. In 1689 a mill was built at Pointe-du-Rapide. It eventually fell into ruin. Its foundations were rediscovered in 2018 in Parc du Moulin-du-Rapide. The Rivi`ere des Prairies however wasn’t just about peaceful settlement.

On July 2 1690 a fierce battle took place near the eastern end of the river. About one hundred Iroquois warriors clashed with twenty-five colonists. A monument and plaque commemorate this clash. The text on the plaque was revised in 1982 and the monument was restored in 2013. The Rivi`ere des Prairies was clearly a scene of both peace and conflict.

The Rivi`ere des Prairies wasn’t always pristine. Its history is intertwined with environmental challenges. In the early 20th century untreated sewage flowed into the river. This turned parts of it into an open sewer. This issue was reported as far back as 1911. A report commissioned by the Montreal Board of Trade in the late 1950s highlighted the severity of the pollution. Improvements have been made since then but issues persist in some areas like Rive-Boisu00e9e. Even today visible pollution such as plastic bags and other debris are frequent. The Rivi`ere des Prairies reminds us of the lasting impact of pollution.

Today the Rivi`ere des Prairies is a place of great beauty and historical significance. It winds its way through Montreal’s landscape. It’s a vital part of the city’s identity. It is a constant reminder of the past the present and what we need to protect for the future. The Rivi`ere des Prairies is a place you won’t soon forget.
