How about we step back in time to 1932? Dr. Ernest Holmes established the Founders Church of Religious Science. By 1960, his church had 100,000 members across the country.

Los Angeles needed a new sanctuary. Members hired renowned architect Paul R. Williams. He designed a new church on West Sixth Street. Williams embraced the church’s philosophy. It was about wholeness and positivity. He designed a Modern-style building. It was elliptically shaped to enhance feelings of inclusion.

The Founders Church of Religious Science became one of Williams’ few religious designs. It stands as a great example of his Modern buildings.

The reinforced concrete building has smooth wall surfaces. A steel-framed dome tops it. The dome reaches the equivalent of four stories. A tall wall of pierced concrete block surrounds the church. It encloses a lush garden. This adds visual interest to the main sanctuary. The wall and dome have a Moorish flavor. It is presented in a clean, simplified Modern style.

Inside, the chapel had closed-circuit television. This was brand-new technology. If the main auditorium filled, people could watch services in the chapel.

In 1957, Dr. Holmes asked Williams for a church sketch. Williams drew a circle. Holmes saw it as a symbol. It represented wholeness, unity, and unending love. These were basic to Science of Mind teachings.

The ground floor accommodated 1,050 people. The balcony area added 313 more seats. The Church of Religious Science included closed-circuit television. Lush gardens surrounded the congregation. Sculptures of great philosophers were featured. A 14-foot high concrete screen wall enclosed the garden.

Paul R. Williams described Ernest Holmes as a great spiritual leader. He also called him a valued friend. Williams attended Holmes’ services and lectures. He often left with something beneficial.

The total construction cost $3.5 million. The church alone cost $1 million. In February 2020, Edward Viljoen was elected as the new Spiritual Leader.

The Founders Church of Religious Science is more than a building. It embodies a philosophy. It embraces inclusion and positive thinking. The church stands as a testament to Dr. Ernest Holmes’ vision. It reflects Paul R. Williams’ architectural brilliance. In 2008, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was exactly 60 years and one month since Founder’s dedication on Jan 3, 1960.
