In the heart of St. Petersburg, a grand tribute stands in ruins. This is the Monument to Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich. It’s a haunting reminder of a tumultuous era in Russian history. The Памятник шефу лейб-гвардии Конно-гренадерского полка великому князю Михаилу Николаевичу began as a symbol of imperial power. It ended as a casualty of revolution. The monument was originally intended for a site near the Manezhnaya Ploshchad’. However, it was placed instead in the Novo-Manezhny Square. Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich was the son of Emperor Nicholas I and the younger brother of Emperor Alexander II. He played a significant role in the abolition of serfdom in 1861. He later served as Governor-General of the Caucasus for an impressive 24 years. The monument’s story mirrors the turbulent life of the Grand Duke. The initial proposal for the monument was put forth in 1910. A special committee was established to oversee its creation. Due to disagreements over its placement and design, the project faced many delays. The monument was finally completed in 1912. The official unveiling ceremony took place on Manezhnaya Ploshchad’ on January 12, 1914. The monument’s cost reached a staggering 330,000 rubles. The monument was designed by the Finnish sculptor P.K. Klodt von Jürgensburg, assisted by a group of five renowned individuals. The monument was cast in Turin and transported to St. Petersburg by sea. Its unveiling was a grand event attended by members of the Imperial family and other dignitaries. However, its glory was short-lived. On April 12, 1918, the Lenin, Stalin, and Lunacharsky governments signed a decree “On the Removal of Monuments to the Tsars and Their Servants.” Although officially sanctioned for removal, many monuments escaped immediate destruction due to logistical issues and public outcry. This monument was among the lucky few. But it still met with an unfortunate fate. During World War II, it suffered damage from artillery shelling. The monument was not restored after the war. It slowly fell into disrepair. In the 1990s, discussions arose about its reconstruction. This proposal encountered significant resistance. This halted the restoration efforts. Today, the Памятник шефу лейб-гвардии Конно-гренадерского полка великому князю Михаилу Николаевичу stands as a poignant reminder of Imperial Russia. It serves as a silent witness to the tides of change. It reflects the complexities of Russian history.
