The story of Ciudad Vieja is one of ambition and tragedy. Jorge de Alvarado founded it. He chose a site at the foot of the Agua volcano. It seemed an idyllic location. Unfortunately it was also perilously close to a sleeping giant.

In 1541 disaster struck. A massive lahar a volcanic mudflow roared down the mountain. It buried Ciudad Vieja in a torrent of mud and rock. The city was destroyed. The governor Beatriz de la Cueva perished in the catastrophe. Many others lost their lives. The survivors were left to pick up the pieces of their lives and rebuild elsewhere.

Some historians debate the exact location of the original settlement. Domingo Juarros wrote about differing accounts in his book Compendio de la Historia de la Ciudad de Guatemala. He noted discrepancies even in 1818 regarding the city’s initial placement. The debate continues to this day adding another layer to the mystery of Ciudad Vieja.

Anne Cary Maudslay and her husband Alfred Percival Maudslay visited the area in 1895. They questioned the common explanation for the destruction.
