Graffiti covers nearly every surface here at Centro Sociale Occupato Autogestito Leoncavallo. But it is more than just colorful art. It represents a voice. The Leoncavallo is a self-managed social center in Milan. It has been a hub for counter-culture since 1975.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Milan in the 1970s. A former pharmaceutical factory on via Leoncavallo was squatted. This marked the beginning of the Leoncavallo social center. It quickly became a space for radical ideas. The center aimed to be a space organized without internal hierarchies. It sought to provide a collective space for the community.

Over the years, the Leoncavallo faced challenges. In 1989, the mayor of Milan ordered its eviction and partial demolition. But the community wouldn’t let it disappear. Days after the eviction, the Leoncavallo was reoccupied and rebuilt by hand. This act of defiance showed the center’s importance to its supporters.

The story doesn’t end there. In 1994, right-wing politicians campaigned against the center. It was evicted again. However, the Leoncavallo spirit remained unbroken. After a short stay in a warehouse, a new location was found on via Antoine Watteau. This new space was a former printers. It was much larger than the original site. It included courtyards and a central square.

Interestingly, Matteo Salvini, a city councillor in the late 1990s, frequented the Leoncavallo. He even defended it against attacks by the mayor at the time.

Today, Centro Sociale Occupato Autogestito Leoncavallo continues to thrive. It hosts concerts, theater shows and debates. You can find art exhibitions, language courses and workshops here. It is also home to a radio station. The Leoncavallo is a hub for street art. The center provides free food and accommodation for those in need. It sustains itself through benefit concerts and bar takings. The center refuses to pay taxes for ideological reasons.

Naomi Klein visited the Leoncavallo in 2001. She described it as practically a self-contained city. It had restaurants, gardens, a bookstore, a cinema and a club large enough to host Public Enemy. In 2019, the center defined itself as Leoncavallo Self-Managed Public Space.

The Leoncavallo is more than just a building. It is a symbol of resistance. It is a testament to the power of community. It is a space where people come together to create change. It is a place where everyone can find a voice. Its story continues to evolve. The Centro Sociale Occupato Autogestito Leoncavallo remains a vital part of Milan’s cultural landscape.
