Completed in 1732 the Bridge of Toledo stands before us. It is not just a crossing. It is a testament to Madrid’s resilience. Have you noticed the Baroque style? It is quite distinctive.

The Bridge of Toledo’s story began long before its current form. In the 17th century, King Philip IV wanted a bridge. It would connect Madrid to Toledo. Juan Gómez de Mora designed the first bridge. José Villareal built it between 1649 and 1660. It was then known as the Puente Toledana. Sadly a flood destroyed it shortly after.

Another bridge was built in 1680. Disaster struck again. Another flood swept it away. Rebuilding was necessary. José del Olmo designed it in 1682. José de Arroyo took over. Teodoro Ardemans continued their work.

Finally, in 1715, Pedro de Ribera was tasked with designing the bridge we see today. Construction did not begin until 1719. Francisco Antonio de Salcedo y Aguirre pushed the project forward. The Bridge of Toledo was completed in 1732.

Look at the granite ashlars. They form nine half-point spans. Semicircles line the pavement. Two pavilion-shaped structures stand at the central arch. These house sculptures. Juan Ron created the sculptures of San Isidro and Santa María de la Cabeza.

Notice the bridge’s design. It features solid buttresses and drums. These are topped with small balconies. The roadway is almost five meters wide. At each end, ramps connect the bridge to the banks.

In 1956, the Bridge of Toledo was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. This protects its historical significance.

In the 20th century, traffic became a concern. Carlos Fernández Casado proposed two new bridges. They would divert traffic. This would protect the Bridge of Toledo. In 1972, the M-30 highway project began. Two parallel footbridges were added. These relieved traffic.

The M-30 project impacted the environment. Between 1986 and 1987, Javier Bellosillo restored the surrounding area. Restoration and consolidation work continued between 1992 and 1997. José María Sendarrubias and Alberto Arias led these efforts. Their work was recognized in 1997.

More recently, the Madrid Río project affected the side arches. In 2023, the statues of San Isidro and Santa María de la Cabeza were restored. The Baroque shrines were also renovated.

The Bridge of Toledo has survived floods and traffic. It stands as a symbol of Madrid. It embodies resilience and artistic beauty. As you cross, remember its history. Appreciate the Baroque details. Think of the people who built and rebuilt it. The Bridge of Toledo is more than a crossing. It is a lasting monument.
