Founded in 1957 Bethel Christian Fellowship stands as a testament to enduring faith. Its history is interwoven with the Belk family a legacy of pastoral leadership. G W Belk and his wife Betty established Bethel Temple in Lakewood Colorado. They moved from a smaller church in Denver. The church found its home at 5405 West 1st Avenue. This building became a beacon of hope for the community.
The name Bethel meaning House of God reflects the church’s core mission. It echoes Jacob’s experience in Genesis 28 a place of divine encounter. For the Belks Bethel was more than just a building. It was a place where lives were transformed. A place where faith took root and flourished.
In 1970 the Belks took a sabbatical. They moved to Missouri. However the call to ministry remained strong. They returned to Denver in 1972. There they established Christian Assembly Church now known as Washington Park Chapel. This church also served as a training ground for future ministers. A mentoring program helped young people answer their call to serve.
Reverend Gary W Belk son of G W Belk carries on the family tradition. He received theological training at Oklahoma City Southwestern College. He was ordained in 1982. His ministry reflects the teachings and love of Jesus Christ. He emphasizes a personal relationship with God not just religious ritual.
In 2010 Reverend Belk and his wife Danette returned to Bethel. They took the helm of Bethel Christian Fellowship. They continue to pastor the congregation in the same building their father founded. The church remains a vibrant part of the Lakewood community. A place where people find spiritual guidance and support. A place where the House of God continues to welcome all.
Bethel’s story is one of perseverance. It is a story of family legacy. It’s also a story of unwavering faith. It’s a story of answering the call to serve. The church continues to thrive embodying its namesake a house where people connect with God. A legacy that continues to inspire and uplift. A beacon of hope standing tall in Lakewood Colorado. A testament to the power of faith and family.
