The air hums with an ancient energy here at the Mikami Jinja Shrine. Doesn’t it feel different? Mikami Jinja Shrine is nestled at the foot of Mount Mikami. It’s a place steeped in history, dating back to at least 718 AD. That’s when Fujiwara no Fuhito, a powerful figure of his time, ordered the construction of a shrine here. But the story goes back even further. Archaeological digs have revealed artifacts from the Yayoi period, suggesting that Mount Mikami has been a sacred site for far longer. The shrine is dedicated to Ame-no-mikage-no-mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu. Legend has it that he descended upon Mount Mikami during the reign of Emperor Korei. He became the spirit, the very essence, of the mountain. The main building of Mikami Jinja Shrine is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. It seamlessly fuses traditional Shinto design with Buddhist elements. It’s a testament to the fluidity and interconnectedness of Japanese spiritual life. In fact, this unique fusion earned the main building the designation of a National Treasure in 1952.
