Were Neukirchen and Adorf always one entity? No. Neukirchen/Erzgebirge, nestled southwest of Chemnitz, has a rich history woven with threads of resilience and transformation. Neukirchen’s story begins in the mid-12th century. It first appeared as “nova ecclesia,” meaning new church, in the Chemnitz Monastery’s records. This suggests a strong religious influence in its founding. The village expanded from the “Fürstenweg” in Oberdorf, along the present-day Nordstr. and Weststr. A mill and church likely existed by the 13th century, although officially documented later. The first tavern appeared in Chemnitz’s council records in 1331. After the Reformation, Neukirchen, along with Burkhardtsdorf and Klaffenbach, were acquired by Wolf Hünerkopf in 1543. He built a manor house, the current “Torhaus.” The Saxon Elector August purchased the estate in 1570. It eventually passed through several owners to Dietrich von Taube in 1615, whose family held it for over 200 years. He also commissioned the construction of what we now call the Wasserschloss. Despite the hardships of the Thirty Years’ War and recurring plagues, Neukirchen persevered. The 19th and 20th centuries saw rapid industrialization, especially in textile and hosiery production. This transformed Neukirchen from an agricultural village to a bustling industrial hub. Essential infrastructure followed, including a central water supply in 1914. Electricity arrived around 1900, with street lighting soon after. Gas supply began in 1925. Neukirchen also gained a rail connection with Klaffenbach in 1895 and a bus line to Chemnitz in 1910. Neukirchen’s story is incomplete without mentioning Adorf. Adorf also traces its origins to the mid-12th to early 13th century, appearing in the Chemnitz Monastery’s records around the same time as Neukirchen. Adorf experienced similar trials during the Thirty Years’ War, including plague outbreaks and devastating losses. It gained a railway halt in 1909 and its own church. Adorf lost its independence in 1999. It became part of Neukirchen/Erzgebirge. Today, the community is represented by a local council. Neukirchen/Erzgebirge stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.
