In March 1915, the first somber burials took place at Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery. This hallowed ground, nestled near Kemmel, became a final resting place for soldiers who fought fiercely in World War I. Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery silently witnessed the ebb and flow of the conflict. It was used by fighting units and field ambulances until October 1917. The fighting around Kemmel was intense, especially in the latter half of April 1918, involving both British and French troops. After the Armistice, the cemetery expanded. Over 100 graves were brought in from the surrounding battlefields. Now, Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery holds the remains of 315 servicemen from the First World War. Of these, 67 remain unidentified. Special memorials honor six casualties known or believed to be among them. The cemetery, designed by Charles Holden, stands as a testament to their sacrifice. It covers an area of 1,404 square meters. A brick and stone wall encloses this sacred space. Among the fallen are soldiers from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war. It is a place of remembrance and reflection for those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom.
