Kougari Oval

What’s in a name? At Kougari Oval, the answer echoes with the cries of seagulls soaring above Moreton Bay. Kougari, you see, is actually the Yugambeh word for “seagull”, a fitting tribute to the graceful birds that grace this waterfront ground. Since 1967, Kougari Oval has been the home turf of the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, a team with a rich history as colourful as their red, green and white jerseys. This place has seen it all, from the lean early years to the glory days of the ’80s. Imagine the roar of the crowd in 1982 when Wynnum Manly, after 32 long years, finally clinched their first premiership victory! Those were heady days. The team, led by the legendary Des Morris, went on to dominate the Brisbane Rugby League. They even added Wally Lewis, Queensland’s own “King Wally”, to their ranks in 1984. Four Wynnum Manly players – Gene Miles, Greg Dowling, Bob Lindner and Lewis himself – were part of the unstoppable 1986 Kangaroos, a team that went undefeated on their tour of Great Britain and France. Kougari Oval wasn’t just a witness to these triumphs, it was the heart and soul of a community celebrating its heroes. Today, the spirit of those glory days lives on at Kougari Oval.
