What if a city could speak? What tales would Livonia, Michigan, whisper if its streets and buildings could talk? Livonia, a western suburb of Detroit, holds a rich history within its 36 square miles. Livonia’s story began in 1835 as Livonia Township. Settlers, many hailing from Livonia, New York, gave the new community its familiar name. The township grew, encompassing small villages like Elmwood, a stop on the Detroit, Lansing and Northern Railroad. Livonia officially became a city in 1950. One driving factor for incorporation was gaining tax revenue from the Detroit Race Course. This venue, later focused on harness racing, eventually closed in 1998. Livonia’s history also includes a unique chapter in the late 1960s. Arab-American Christians, primarily from the Levant region, began settling in Livonia, adding their vibrant culture to the city’s tapestry. Livonia has even hosted six US presidents, from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush. Today, Livonia boasts a population nearing 100,000. Livonia has a thriving economy, top-rated schools, and beautiful parks. It’s a city that values families and community. Livonia offers excellent educational opportunities.
