“Joan of Arc on horseback, stolen and then reborn,” sounds like the start of a legend. This is the story of the Jeanne d’Arc Statue in Lille. It is more than just a monument. It is a symbol of resilience and French spirit.

The Jeanne d’Arc Statue stands proudly in Place Jeanne d’Arc. Inaugurated on October 13, 1912, the statue had a short life. It was stolen during the turmoil of 1918. But the story does not end there.

Like a phoenix from the ashes, a new statue arose. In 1925, a replica replaced the stolen original. This act demonstrated the enduring admiration for Jeanne d’Arc. It also showed the city’s determination to preserve its heritage.

Emmanuel Frémiet was the sculptor. He captured the essence of the Maid of Orléans in bronze. The Barbedienne foundry brought Frémiet’s vision to life. The result is an equestrian statue. It shows Jeanne d’Arc as both warrior and saint.

This statue is a copy of the equestrian statue in Paris. The original statue stands in Place des Pyramides.

Jeanne d’Arc was born a peasant girl in eastern France around 1412. She claimed to have visions from God. These visions instructed her to free France from English domination.

Charles, the dauphin, sent her to the siege of Orléans. Despite skepticism, she lifted the siege in only nine days. This victory paved the way for Charles VII’s coronation in Reims. It also settled the disputed succession to the throne.

The Burgundians captured Jeanne d’Arc. They sold her to the English. An ecclesiastical court tried her and burned her at the stake in 1431. She was only 19 years old.

Pope Callixtus III examined the trial 25 years later. He pronounced her innocent and declared her a martyr. She was canonized in 1920. Today, she is one of the patron saints of France.

The Jeanne d’Arc Statue in Lille is more than bronze and stone. It embodies courage and faith. It reminds us of a young woman who defied expectations. She changed the course of history. The statue’s theft and replacement only add to its story. It is a testament to the enduring power of symbols.

Take a moment to appreciate the details. Consider the weight of history. Think about the values this statue represents. The Jeanne d’Arc Statue continues to inspire. It reminds us of the strength found in conviction.
