Dreaming of a cold one? Then you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to Brewerytown, a neighborhood in North Philadelphia with a rich brewing history.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Brewerytown was the beer capital of America. Philadelphia was the first in the nation to introduce beer. It once boasted nearly 700 breweries. Many were located right here.

The neighborhood’s name is derived from this local history. Brewerytown is roughly bounded by Cecil B. Moore Avenue, Parrish Street, 25th Street, and the Schuylkill River. The area flourished in the 1800s. More than a dozen breweries stimulated the economy. The neighborhood was close to farmland.

Prohibition had a devastating effect. After the brewing industry collapsed, beer production moved to the Midwest. By the mid-1980s, every brewery had left Brewerytown. The name still remains.

Following the collapse, crime skyrocketed. The area was declared blighted by the city. In the early 1990s, Brewerytown was certified as a historical district.

Now, Brewerytown is experiencing a resurgence. Young professionals are moving in. New development projects are underway. Girard Avenue has become a central commercial corridor. Storefronts are lining the streets. They range from coffee houses to bars. There are even pet grooming shops.

Neighbors tell Newsworks that they used to call it North Philly. The name Brewerytown started to be used by developers. They wanted to attract young people.

The neighborhood hasn’t fully developed at the pace of Fishtown. But there have been changes. New stores, amenities, and coffee bars are popping up. There are modern apartment buildings in the works.

Not all longtime residents are against the new development. Some older members voted for a new apartment complex. Developers say they are trying to avoid being gentrifiers.

MM Partners has invested millions in the neighborhood. They plan to invest even more.

Most of the infrastructure is German-style. Architect Otto Wolf designed many buildings here. They have classic red brick and arched windows. The roof lines are intricately designed.

The Brewerytown Spring Festival takes place along Girard Avenue. People can experience Brewerytown through food, drinks, and music.

Today, Brewerytown is a community where friends and neighbors come together. They enjoy their surroundings. They share a little piece of Philadelphia history.

As you explore Brewerytown, notice the mix of historic buildings and modern construction. Enjoy the walkable streets. Visit local taverns and coffee shops. Experience the local flavor. Living in Brewerytown means having access to awesome places. The Philadelphia Zoo, The Met, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art are close by.

Locals fall in love with the gorgeous old buildings. They line the streets. They also enjoy the beautiful views of the city. The Schuylkill River is another great sight.
