Did you ever hear of a church that offers free bike rides and coffee? Well, right here at Canal Boulevard Baptist Church, also known as New Orleans Deaf Church, that’s exactly what happens. This isn’t your typical Sunday service and sermon. Canal Boulevard Baptist Church is a vibrant hub for the deaf community in New Orleans. It’s a place of worship, yes, but it’s also a place of connection, support, and even a little bit of fun. Every second Saturday, they host “Deaf Ride,” where folks can enjoy free rides on a four-person surrey bike through City Park. Afterwards, everyone heads over to Morning Call for free coffee, beverages, and donuts. It’s a chance to socialize, connect with others, and build a sense of community. Canal Boulevard Baptist Church isn’t just about recreation. The church offers a range of services, all conducted in American Sign Language. These include Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall, followed by the main worship service at 10:45 a.m. in the larger building facing Canal Boulevard. Wednesday evenings are dedicated to Bible chat at Whole Foods Market on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Pastor John Lovas welcomes everyone, whether you have a Bible or not. If you don’t, they’ll gladly give you one. The church also provides free classes and training. They advocate for the deaf community, their families, and those who serve them. They work with students from various educational institutions like the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Tulane, and the University of New Orleans. They offer free services like interpreting, training, and ministry to those who are incarcerated or institutionalized. Canal Boulevard Baptist Church is more than a church.
