Astor Court Apartments wasn’t just thrown up. Architect Charles A Platt designed this magnificent 12-story structure. He envisioned a U-shaped building enclosing a lush courtyard. Imagine residents enjoying a private oasis in the heart of Manhattan. Some believe landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman contributed to this hidden gem.

The red brick facade is understated. It hints at the grandeur within. The building originally boasted six to nine-room apartments. Luxurious spaces for the city’s elite. The apartments were later subdivided. Today many retain their original charm.

In 1985 Astor Court Apartments became a cooperative. The courtyard garden was revitalized. Mature trees now shade vibrant flowers. This private space remains one of the Upper West Side’s true jewels. Robert A M Stern called Astor Court perhaps the loveliest courtyard apartment building built between 1900 and World War I.
