Alta Vista Gardens is a true hidden gem in Vista. It offers a calming escape for many. The gardens have been open since the early 2000s. Alta Vista Gardens began in the late 1990s. A nonprofit group oversaw the project in 1999. The Vista City Council approved the Master Plan in 2005.
Alta Vista Gardens’ mission is to bring together people nature and art. It also provides an interactive living classroom. This classroom is for students in San Diego County. The gardens display flora and fauna. They are unique to each area’s designation. Trails wind throughout Alta Vista Gardens. This allows visitors to explore each area.
There are many different areas. These include the Australian Garden and the Pan Asian Garden. You can also see the California Natives Garden and the Jungle Garden. Other areas include the South African Garden and the Children’s Garden.
In 2007 a 35-foot tall obelisk was built. It resembles the Washington Monument. It stands in the center of the paved road. It is across from the Garden House and Shop.

Nancy B. Jones directs the Children’s Garden. She is known as Farmer Jones. She is the Director of Children’s Programs. A large number of programs are offered for children of all ages.
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens stayed open through the pandemic. It provided an opportunity for Vista to get outdoors safely. People came for exercise or for meditation. The gardens were a pressure-relief valve for our community.
