Marvelous Moselle isn’t it? The Landkreis Cochem-Zell stretches along its banks. This captivating region boasts a rich history. It’s a place where three distinct landscapes meet. The fertile Moselle valley with its famed vineyards. The rolling hills of the Hunsrück to the east. The rugged peaks of the Eifel to the north and west.

The Landkreis Cochem-Zell wasn’t always as we see it today. In 1816 the districts of Cochem and Zell were established under Prussian rule. Imagine the changes. It wasn’t until 1969 that the Zell district was dissolved. Its northern and central sections were joined with Cochem. This union birthed the Landkreis Cochem-Zell we know today. Even more recently in 2014 the municipalities Lahr Morsdorf and Zilshausen were transferred to the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis. History keeps reshaping this land.

The highest point is the Höchstberg reaching 616 meters. This peak offers a spectacular view of the region. The Landkreis’s coat of arms reflects its multifaceted past. It combines symbols from the Trier bishopric the Beilstein territory and the Electorate of the Palatinate. Each symbol telling a silent story of power and influence.

The area is densely populated by nature. The river Moselle is the main artery. It flows through the Landkreis dividing the Eifel from the Hunsrück. About half the land is covered by forest. This green blanket is a testament to the region’s commitment to environmental protection.

Landkreis Cochem-Zell is also a land of contrasts. Steep slopes give way to expansive plateaus. This contrasts creates the breathtaking scenery. The Calmont near Bremm stands out. This is Europe’s steepest vineyard a testament to human endeavor and the beauty of nature.

In 2003 the Landkreis began a journey towards sustainability. The goal was to meet its energy needs through renewable sources. In 2008 the local council declared the ambition to become a “zero-emission district”. Since 2012 the Landkreis has been self-sufficient in electricity production using renewable energy. A remarkable achievement.

Today tourism thrives here. It’s driven by the unique cultural landscape and the many attractions. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Tunnel is one of Germany’s longest railway tunnels. Bad Bertrich has the country’s sole Glaubersalz thermal spa. This makes the Landkreis an inviting place for all.

The Landkreis Cochem-Zell is far more than just a geographical entity. It’s a dynamic region. It boasts a rich history beautiful landscapes and a strong commitment to sustainability. It is a place waiting to be explored. A place you will never forget.
