“Imagine a sanctuary where echoes of history resonate.” That is Masjid Nurul Iman in Batam. This isn’t just a place of worship. It is a testament to time and faith. Let’s step back to understand the Masjid Nurul Iman’s story.

Masjid Nurul Iman in Batam is relatively young. Though other older mosques exist in Batam, Masjid Nurul Islam was officially inaugurated in 1991. Its roots are deeply intertwined with Batam’s industrial development.

Back in the early 1990s, Batamindo Industrial Park was burgeoning. The visionary behind it was none other than BJ Habibie. He was then Minister of Research and Technology and Head of the Batam Authority. Habibie also led the Ikatan Cendekiawan Muslim se-Indonesia. He recognized the need for a spiritual anchor within the industrial landscape. Thus, Masjid Nurul Islam was built. Its construction coincided with that of the Sei Beduk Dam. Both projects reflected Habibie’s commitment to progress and community well-being.

Initially, Masjid Nurul Islam was modest. It accommodated about 40 rows of worshippers. Its design featured granite. As the community grew, so did the mosque. Today, it can host up to 3,000 people for prayers.

Masjid Nurul Islam became a focal point. Muslim employees from across Batamindo would gather here. Prominent figures visited the mosque. Amin Rais and Mahfud MD were among them. The mosque also welcomed national and international preachers.

Another Masjid named Masjid Jami’ Nurul Iman stands on Buluh Island in Batam. Locals say this Masjid Jami’ Nurul Iman has stood since 1872. Sultan Penyengat used it as a prayer and resting place when visiting Temasek which is now Singapore. The original structure has undergone several renovations. Two main pillars at the back remain from the original building. The domes resemble those of the Sultan Riau Mosque on Penyengat Island. A sacred tomb lies in the mosque’s courtyard. It is believed to be the resting place of a Bintan princess. She fell ill while passing Buluh Island.

The Masjid Jami Nurul Iman on Buluh Island is recognized as a Malay cultural heritage site. It is protected under Batam City Regional Regulation Number 1 of 2018.

Whether it’s the Masjid Nurul Islam or Masjid Jami’ Nurul Iman, these religious buildings offer a serene escape. Each brick and prayer tells a story. Both mosques serve as important landmarks in Batam’s cultural and religious landscape. They provide a place for reflection. They offer a connection to history. They show the vibrant faith of the community.
