Initially, Ibaraki Municipal South Junior High School held classes within Yosshun Elementary School. This was a temporary measure. In August 1968, the current school building was completed. The school then moved to its present location. The completion ceremony occurred in September 1968. At that time, the school also adopted its emblem.

The school song was established in April 1969. April 25th became Foundation Day. In June 1977, Tenno Junior High School split off from Ibaraki Municipal South Junior High School.

The school actively promotes barrier-free access. It was among the first in the city to install elevators. It also added ramps. Earthquake resistance work finished in 2002.

Ibaraki Municipal South Junior High School once faced overcrowding. Large-scale residential development increased student numbers.
