A majestic structure of stone and copper greets you. This is the Église Saint-Stanislas de Kostka a testament to faith and craftsmanship.

Built between 1910 and 1912 this Neo-Romanesque church replaced a Jesuit chapel. The chapel was already dedicated to Saint Stanislas Kostka a young Jesuit novice. Archbishop Paul Bruchési established the parish in 1910. The first pastor was Abbé Vincent Piette also rector of the University of Montreal.

The church’s construction involved the Boileau et Frères firm. Architect Louis-Alphonse Venne designed the building. Its imposing size about 6000 square meters reflects the religious fervor of the time. The 1910 Eucharistic Congress fueled this fervor. The church’s bell towers and copper dome are a testament to skilled tinsmiths.

Sadly a fire in 1917 severely damaged the building. It required a major reconstruction. Venne and Joseph-Dalbé Viau oversaw the rebuilding. They retained the original exterior walls. They updated the interior using the same external stone walls and copper roof.

Inside you’ll find an impressive Casavant organ from 1920. Restored in 1987 it boasts 54 stops and three keyboards. The organ’s inauguration in 1920 featured Joseph Bonnet a renowned French organist. A later restoration by Guilbault-Thérien in 1988 added a more baroque and classical aesthetic. This involved some controversial changes but it remains impressive.

The church’s interior features paintings by Carle and Petrucci. The stained-glass windows are a blend of styles. The earliest are from O’Shea and Perdriau. Guido Nincheri added more in 1929.
