A short sloping street it is. Rue Franz Gailliard Franz Gailliardstraat in Saint-Gilles. It connects Vanderschrickstraat to the crossroads with Praagstraat Dethystraat and Lissabonstraat.
Once known as Aatstraat its name changed in 1932. It honors Franz Gailliard. He was an impressionist-luminist painter. He lived and worked at number 12 on Rue Franz Gailliard. His son Jean-Jacques Gailliard a self-proclaimed ‘surimpressionist’ also lived there until his death.
The street’s layout follows a plan from October 31 1865. Buildings mostly modest neoclassical houses went up between 1870 and 1880. Many have been renovated. There are also former workshops small industrial buildings and some modernist apartment buildings.
Number 3 is notable. It was originally built in 1880. The building was raised under a trapezoidal facade with a dormer window. Architect Pierre de Gieter designed this in 1930. It was altered in 1968 and 1978. Since 1989 it has served as an evangelical church.
Numbers 4 6 and 8 form a group of three houses. Built in 1887 they are now clad in bricks. Number 5a-5b is a small house in the modernist style. Architect J Verstraeten designed it in 1947. Number 7 another modernist style house dates from 1931. Number 9 a neoclassical house from 1880 was replaced around 1998. Its facade however remains under a roof terrace.
Number 14 is a house with neoclassical influences built in 1875. Number 15 another neoclassical style house was clad in bricks in 1954. It sits on a continuous plot extending to Dethystraat. Number 67 on Dethystraat housed a printing workshop. Architect Boveroulle designed it in 1920. Architect J Michaut converted it into a dwelling in 1925.
Number 17 once a shed from 1893 is now a garage. Number 20 a neoclassical style house from 1874 was raised in 1936. Number 21 originally neoclassical from 1878 was raised and brick-clad in 1964. It underwent a second renovation in 1973. Numbers 22 and 43-45 on Praagstraat form a corner building. Originally neoclassical from 1876 it has been altered since. Numbers 25 and 57 on Dethystraat make up a corner house in an eclectic style from 1903.
